Dow future are UP +0.37% (+107 points), S&P futures are UP +0.34% (+11 points) and NASDAQ futures are UP +0.42% (+40 points)

 

U.S. stock index futures are rising with economic data and for our sector, Alnylam Pharmaceuticals (ALNY) earnings, while fears over the coronavirus outbreak continued to sidetrack investors;

Europe markets climb as virus fears subside as the pan-European Stoxx 600 climbed +0.5% in early trade;

Asia Pacific markets jumped in reaction to positive developments on the U.S.-China trade front. Beijing said Thursday it would halve tariffs on hundreds of U.S. imports from 1:01 p.m. on Feb. 14, according to a statement on the Ministry of Finance’s website;

 

Data Docket: weekly jobless claims are due at 8:30 a.m. ET, as well as preliminary fourth-quarter productivity figures and labor costs.

Markets also received a boost from the announcement from China’s Ministry of Finance that Beijing is set to halve tariffs on hundreds of U.S. imports worth around $75 billion. Tariffs on some U.S. goods will be cut from 10% to 5%, and from 5% to 2.5% on others, which will take effect on Feb. 14.

It was also announced by Reuters which cited reports “that said a research team at Zhejiang University had found a drug to treat people infected by the new coronavirus.”

 

Just like algorithms, rules-are-what-we-make-of-them. The take-away, don’t dwell on what’s happening but, learn the lesson of timing – Q4 LPS (loss-per-share) results are starting while many others are being “formulated”.

  • The IBB closed up +3.01% and XBI closed up +2.33%
  • The NASDAQ closed UP +40.71 points (+0.43%)
  • The close was positive with an A/D line of 27/5, 3 flats of 35 covered,
  • The range of the 27 upside was +0.56% (BLFS) to +22.77% (ADRO) while the 5 downside ranged from -0.02% (IONS) to -17.81% (BLCM); 
  • 4 out of the 27 upside had higher than the 3-month average volume;
  • 1 out of the 5 downside had higher than the 3-month average volume;

 

Q1:

February registered 3 positive closes – so far.

January registered 10 positive, 9 negative closes and 2 holidays.

Q4:

  • December register 11 negative and 10 positive closes
  • November registered 1 holiday, 12 positive and 8 negative close;
  • October registered 10 positive, 1 neutral and 14 negative closes;
